Accused Stalker Asked: 'Yet What If I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman indicted with pursuing Kate McCann reportedly recorded her a phone message which questioned: "what if I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who court testimony revealed has persistently declared she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial charged with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, the tribunal learned phone records and evidence recovered from phones recorded Ms Wandelt repeatedly demanding Madeleine's mother for a genetic test over the past two years.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - when she was three years old during a trip in Portugal - is among the most covered missing child cases and is still open.
'I Don't Want Money'
Another phone message, played in court, recorded Ms Wandelt saying: "I realize I'm heavy and unattractive like Madeleine was, but I feel what I believe."
While a separate message of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's recording expressed: "Imagine there is a small chance that I am Madeleine? What happens next? Is that not crucial for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I maintain a life here in Poland, I just want to understand," she added.
The jury was told that through electronic messages, SMS messages and calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a genetic test, forwarded youth pictures to her phone in a attempt to show a similarity to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and asserted to have "memories" from a youth with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, a data specialist with law enforcement who collated the data, advised the court there "seemed to lack any answers" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore contacted family friends of the McCanns, as per the communication logs.
On 9 October 2024, the father responded to a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "incorrect contact information."
That day Ms Wandelt deposited a message on Mrs McCann's recording stating "I will continue and I intend to demonstrate my point."
The court was informed the co-defendant developed a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt preceding joining her on a visit to the McCanns' residence in that area in that winter.
Call logs revealed Mrs Spragg had reached out via communication app to Mrs McCann to express the press had depicted Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she should be considered genuine in the time preceding the trip to Rothley, Leicestershire, in last December.
The court learned correspondence between the two defendants, in November 2024, considering trying to obtain Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her garbage or from cutlery at a eating establishment.
"We must take action," Mrs Spragg informed Ms Wandelt.
On the occasion of the visit to their residence, Mrs Spragg sent a communication which stated: "We're currently sitting near the McCanns' house with our lights out similar to investigators. I desired to accomplish this with Peter Andrew I never thought I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The trial proceeds.
