Big 12 Conference Chief Labels Notre Dame Remarks After CFP Omission as ‘Totally Out of Bounds’

During a notable criticism, Brett Yormark stated that Notre Dame's athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for his criticisms about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Controversy

Notre Dame maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a participating member in other sports. The AD has argued that the ACC harmed Notre Dame’s bid to qualify for the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to pushing for the inclusion of the University of Miami.

“They do wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we offer substantial football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would make an effort to try to damage us in this procedure,” Bevacqua remarked.

Miami ultimately secured the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, primarily due to winning the direct meeting between the two teams. Bevacqua further alleged that the ACC engaged in a targeted social media campaign over multiple weeks showing its support for Miami.

An Egregious Reaction

Later on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner addressed the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his conduct has been egregious,” Yormark said. “He is totally out of bounds in his tactics and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

The criticism is particularly notable given Bevacqua’s special standing. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the interests of independent Notre Dame.

Past Support and Speculative Rumors

Yormark also remarked the support the ACC provided Notre Dame in the Covid-affected 2020 season, giving the Irish a full ACC schedule and a place in its title game.

“It has been egregious,” Yormark said again. “It’s been unacceptable criticizing the ACC commissioner, when they rescued Notre Dame during Covid...”

Speculation had spread about Notre Dame possibly splitting with the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's strong comments on Tuesday appear to make such a partnership highly improbable in the immediate future.

Notre Dame, who reached the CFP championship game last season, have indicated they are declining a bowl game after missing out this season.
