'Living a Nightmare': Families of Missing Young People Desperately Seek News After Ski Resort Fire
The relatives of young people lost after a tragic fire at a bar in a Swiss ski resort are enduring an agonising period of uncertainty for confirmed information and requesting clues about their children via social media.
The inferno devastated the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the small hours of New Year's Day. Circulated images depict the roof structure being engulfed in flames as beverages with sparklers are raised in celebration.
Officials have stated that it could take an extended period to formally name the victims of the fire, which claimed the lives of four dozen individuals and hurt another scores more. Officials said on Friday that 113 of the those hurt have been accounted for, with the process still underway to identify the remaining few.
In the interim, loved ones have been using social media to request clues about their loved ones who were present at the venue that fateful night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Unaccounted For
The whereabouts of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are still unconfirmed, according to an public plea from his parent.
The who lives of a town near the city, explained to a local newspaper that she had gone back to Lausanne to check whether he was in the hospital, while his father did the equivalent search in the capital, but was unsuccessful.
"I'm living a nightmare, an ordeal. The options are finding my son in the morgue, or I find him in a serious state. It's horrific," she told the paper.
She explained that some of his peers had been discovered with injuries covering a significant portion of their bodies. "There are no words; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has indicated that a number of of its nationals remain missing.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage sportsman, who hailed from Italy but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has released a tribute that he is dead, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "young athlete who carried with him dedication and authentic values."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around midnight. An representative has stated that a official announcement of his death is still pending.
Further Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise among the missing. His mother explained that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the venue.
"Someone with him told me they ran away after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he couldn't see him anymore," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive gold chain.

Consular authorities from her country of origin say they are continuing to monitor the case.
